Heroic Bodies
Heroic Bodies
A Film by Sara Suliman
Sudanese women have long been denied control over their own bodies, enduring severe forms of oppression and violation — from facial scarification and genital mutilation to the brutal wedding custom of leather-strip cutting (Cutting Al Rahat), the dangers of rope birthing that lead to fistula, and the denial of basic civil rights.
Heroic Bodies explores the many ways Sudanese women have fought to reclaim their bodily autonomy and assert their right to exist fully within their societies. Their resistance has taken countless forms: political protests, civil disobedience, hunger strikes, and the willingness to face imprisonment and torture.
The film also traces their pursuit of education, entry into public health and midwifery, their defiance of social expectations by becoming artists and entertainers, and their embrace of matriarchal spiritual traditions such as Zar, where women are free to let their bodies move without restraint.
Heroic Bodies is a powerful narrative tracing the long history of body politics in Sudan from colonial rule to modern governments shaped by political Islamic ideologies. It reveals how women's bodies have been sites of systemic oppression, violation, and control, and highlights the creative, persistent, and courageous ways Sudanese women have resisted, reclaimed, and empowered their bodies.
The film honours women who were cast aside for daring to claim space in public life — whose voices, contributions, and physical presence in the nation's history were dismissed or erased. These women, resilient, outspoken, and defiant, are the true heroic bodies.
Despite all obstacles, they continue to fight for freedom and independence not only for themselves, but for their country. The film affirms that a women-led revolution is inevitable and unstoppable, beginning in Sudan and resonating across Africa — ushering in the dismantling of patriarchy and the triumph of women over political and social oppression.
